USCIS Announces Changes to Naturalization Civics Test

*Changes to Naturalization Civics Test*

Applicants who apply for U.S. citizenship are required to demonstrate that they speak English and have knowledge of American history, government and civic values through an oral test given at their naturalization interviews.

USCIS announced today that Applicants who apply for U.S. citizenship on or after December 1, 2020 will have to take an updated version of the civics test.

While the English portion of the test will remain the same, the following changes will apply if your application for U.S. citizenship is filed on or after December 1, 2020:

  • You will have to study 128 civics questions about American government and history.
  • Out of the 128 questions you studied, you will be asked 20 questions.
  • To pass the test, you will have to answer 12 questions correctly.

The revised test increases the number of questions an applicant must study from 100 to 128. It also increases the number of questions an applicant must get correct from 6 to 12. For some applicants, this change will make it more difficult to pass the civics test during their naturalization interview.

Law MJ Kim LLC recommends that applicants who will have trouble with the revised civics test file their citizenship applications before the changes become effective on December 1, 2020.
